The Rip
Melanie Johnston
Acrylic on Canvas
My abstract interpretation of a rip cutting through the surging, shifting shoreline surf—subtle yet powerful. It reflects the movement beneath the surface, where calm and tension exist together, reminding us that not everything is as it seems… calm, but dangerous.

About the Artist
Melanie Johnston
Pilbara
Born in the Kimberley (Nykina/Jawuru Descent) and raised in the Pilbara, Melanie (Mel) has always been surrounded by the grounding beauty of Country. Creativity has long been a natural thread in her life but painting became more than a passion – it became a form of mental/health therapy. Using each brushstroke as a meditative practice Mel found a way to quiet life’s pressures, reconnect with herself and transform emotion into colour and movement on canvas. Over the past two decades Mel has steadily developed her practice, regularly exhibiting at the Cossack Art Awards and local art competitions. Influenced by colour, country, rocks, ocean, travel photography and emotion Mel’s abstract work captures both fleeting feelings and grounded reflections. Each piece becomes an honest snapshot of a moment – whether calming and meditative or bold and expressive – shaped by curiosity, personal challenges and the landscapes that continue to inspire her. Alongside creating Mel finds joy in viewing and collecting original works by other artists, nurturing a deep appreciation for artistic expression in all its forms.
