Fragile As Grass
Jules Bulleid
Acrylic, pastel and charcoal
This work reflects on the fragility of the Australian outback. A land that it is seen as a tough, harsh and often unforgiving place has a gentle balance at play. As seasons become less and less predictable, the balance of life is often at risk. Do the native grasses germinate, do they set seed for next year, are they overtaken by invasive introduced species. And the effect that these outcomes have on the whole ecosystem. The fragility of it all can also be seen in our own experience as humans who inhabit these places together.

About the Artist
Jules Bulleid
Great Southern
Jules Bulleid is a contemporary landscape painter based in Western Australia. Her practice explores the Australian landscape as an internal and emotive experience rather than a literal depiction of place. Working intuitively and without a predetermined composition, she allows colour, gesture, and layered mark-making to guide each painting as it unfolds. Bulleid’s works distil atmosphere, memory, and sensory response into compositions that balance softness with structural strength. Her paintings offer a contemporary interpretation of landscape that is both grounded in place and universally resonant, inviting viewers to engage with country as something felt as much as seen. Her paintings are held in collections across Australia and internationally
