MEM FOX MESMERISES IN HEDLAND

Mem Fox arrived in Port Hedland to entertain and educate with her own vibrant personality delivering passionate messages about the importance of early childhood literacy and the life-long benefits of reading to children. Teachers and parents were delighted by fun interactive sessions with Mem at the Courthouse Gallery and All Seasons Hotel.

There was much laughter and the collective nodding of heads with regard to Mem's viewpoints about literacy and learning. We were left changed, both by Mem's energy and passion and in thinking more about the mission Mem is on! Mem says she simply cannot retire until she helps everyone to understand the potential we each have to change the lives of children for the better by reading to them!

Mem read her own story books aloud to the groups and it was just fascinating, we were spellbound by how much fun enthusiastic reading aloud can be. Mem is so animated and involved in her stories, each is delivered with vigorous humour and soothing calm.

Mem had so many helpful tips and suggestions, here's a snippet;

  • Mem prescribes holding the book up and adopting a ‘singing' style of reading close with your child as a wonderful way to calm and relax you, the child and the whole household!
  • Mem suggests just a few good quality children's storybooks in a household can be read over and over to children in the same style by adults. You can start as early as 3 months and this will have such a vital impression on children by the time they reach school and start learning to read.
  • Reading to children could never be a chore and you must let go yourself and make it fun. It's not about teaching a child to read, it's about having an ‘hilarious' reading time and children will love you for it and benefit for the rest of their lives.
